Teen Mental Health Challenges Are Real

It is normal for teens to have ups and downs. However, sometimes the challenges can become too much to handle alone.

Many teens deal with stress, worry, and sadness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report found that 40% of high school students, about 4 in 10, “had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” in 2023.

Although slightly down from 2021, 20% (22% in 2021) of students seriously considered suicide, 16% (18% in 2021) made a suicide plan, and 9% (10% in 2021) made an attempt.

Some teens may feel anxious about school, friends, or the future. Others may struggle with low self-esteem or feel like they do not fit in.

These feelings can make it hard to do well in school, have healthy relationships, and enjoy life.

Many teens also struggle with anxiety or depression.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), about 20% of US teens ages 12 to 17 have experienced a major depressive episode in 2021. That is about 5 million teens. Moreover, about 3.7 million, or 14.7%, had “major depressive episodes with severe impairment.”

Anxiety causes severe worry. Teens might feel nervous or scared, even when there is no real danger.

Depression can make teens feel sad, hopeless, and tired. They might lose interest in things they used to enjoy.

Mental Health America (MHA) found in their 2024 study that only 60.5% of kids aged 6 to 17 in the US meet the 3 criteria for flourishing.

Flourishing is the measurement of positive mental health. It looks at 1) learning, 2) resilience, and 3) self-regulation.

It’s explained as kids who are:

  1. Interested and curious about learning new things;
  2. Complete tasks that they started; and
  3. Stay calm and in control when faced with a challenge.

Why A Safe Space for Teens Is Important

It can be hard to talk about personal problems and be vulnerable, even with people you love and trust.

There are many reasons why teenagers might not tell their caretakers everything, and it is not the caretaker’s fault. Remember that! Sometimes, kids feel embarrassed, afraid they’ll disappoint you, or unwilling to add more pressure.

Parents and caregivers might also not have the skills to help kids work through specific issues. Again, this is not your fault.

This is similar to helping your child with AP Calculus. If you can’t help them with the math, you hire a tutor or expert who can.

Our therapists are experts trained to create a safe space for teens and help them. This means that by listening and offering judgment-free support suited to your child’s personal and cultural needs, they’ll feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.

H2: How Psychotherapy for Teens Helps

Psychotherapy for teens is a way to aid them with their thoughts and feelings in a safe and judgment-free space.

In therapy, teens talk to a trained professional who can help them understand their feelings and learn healthy ways to cope.

There are different therapy options available:

  • One-on-one sessions where your child will have the freedom to express themselves honestly.
  • Family therapy can help improve communication and solve problems at home
  • Group therapy can help teens feel less isolated when seeing peers facing similar issues.

Therapy for anxiety and depression also helps teens grow more resilient.

BMH Consulting therapists teach them coping skills and relaxation techniques that teens can use when they feel overwhelmed.

Adolescence is a time to discover one’s identity and where you belong, which can be very confusing. Especially when combined with daily and social pressures, hormonal changes, and brain development.

Therapy can help teens explore their feelings and figure out what matters to them. Our therapists, trained in adolescent therapy, will provide personalized care.

We respect different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds and understand that each teen is unique and has their own story.
